Adding Content

Simply start writing (or cut & paste from what has been written elsewhere, but watch out for odd formatting).

We want our posts to have a consistent look, and to follow ‘best practice’ for blog posts:

  • The headline should assume that the reader may not read the article, but could tempt them to do so.
  • Internal headings (indicative of content) should be provided to allow ‘skim-reading’ of article.
  • At least one image, appropriate to the content (legally obtained, suggestions given here)
  • 300-800 words covering one core idea/focus per post.
  • No grammar/spelling errors!

Adding an Image

*Apologies, it appears that contributor rights don’t allow access to image upload, so you may need to email to [email protected] (in process), or currently bex.lewis[@]durham.ac.uk

Select ‘3’ above, and bring up the following interface. Use ‘Select Files’ to upload from your computer, ‘from URL’ to link to a file on another site, and ‘Media Library’ to choose from images already uploaded:

Allow the image time to upload fully, then click on ‘Show’. The ‘title’ by default will use the image file name. ‘Alternate Text’ should describe the image for those who are visually impaired (and will appear when the mouse hovers over the image). ‘Caption’ can be used if you wish to have text appearing visibly below an image. Once you’re happy with the settings select ‘Insert into Post’ (‘Use as featured image’ is the thumbnail image that appears on the front page of #bigbible: we will add one if you haven’t).

If you wish to re-edit the image once inserted, click on the image within editing, and the following two icons will appear. The ‘landscape’ will bring up editing, the other will delete the image from the page.

Embedding Items (e.g. Video/Audio)

Look to the top-right of the page. Most of the time you’ll want to work in the ‘Visual’ tab, but to embed e.g. YouTube, or Audio, you’ll need to work in the HTML tab.

Simply find the ’embed code’, e.g. on YouTube you would select ‘Share’, then ‘Embed’, then choose the image size (550 pixels is about as wide as you can go on The BigBible Project), then select/copy the embed code and paste it in the appropriate place in HTML view:

There is an odd quirk in WordPress that sometimes items which are embedded disappear on returning to the Visual tab (or if you return/re-save a page), so we tend to add it last, as the post is saved/submitted.

Categories & Tags

Look to the right of the editing area, and ‘Categories’ and ‘Tags’ are available. Please use ‘Digidisciple’ as a category, and see if there is another that is particularly apt. Tags use #digidisciple, and a few other words which will help others find your post (and they can click on categories/tags and find other posts with the same keywords).

Submitting the Post

The post will be submitted where it will sit as ‘pending’ until an administrator selects ‘publish’. Please do email/tweet to let us know that it’s ready. We have asked for posts to be ready a couple of days early where possible so that we can publish at the ‘busiest’ time of day for the blogs, and to give the staff for Big Bible, who have other jobs, a chance to get the material up in a timely manner. In the ‘Publish’ area, there’s an option to edit and change the publication date to the one that you know you are posting on.

Please let Bex know if there are any areas of uploading to the blog that you want help with, or if you just want to send content to be uploaded, please email bex.lewis[@]durham.ac.uk.
