Bex: ” I like the idea of a picnic, but I’m not sure we’d all bring sandwiches – I might bring cake – is that a problem?”Sharon: “Personally – the image of the window helps me – as sometimes there’s things that obscure your view that you need to get around to see everything”Bex: “I guess sandwiches have many fillings – I definitely think we each bring our own life experiences to everything, but how then do we deal with those who say that the Bible is God’s word is what he means and we can’t interpret… how can we do otherwise?”Bex: “Yes, if the window is ‘smeared’ – what do we need to ‘clean’ it with – but is there then just one meaning there?”Sharon: “Hmm…when i write my own poetry, interpretations other people come back with leave me frustrated that they don’t ‘get it’ – i often think, should i leave signposts to the meaning. But then, i don’t want to patronise”Bex: “Is it OK for them to take their own meanings from your poetry? (I get v. frustrated with ‘art’ that’s a squiggle then called ‘untitled’ ….)”Sharon: “I half think, yes – that’s fine. But would love them to understand. But of course, they wouldn’t – because they may not have had the same sort of experience i’m writing about”Bex: ” I LOVE seeing different people’s insights which is why with BigBible that have v light touch for editing…”

Response on Facebook “Yes definitely, there is no other way really. Whether the reader admits it or not, we all bring our own experiences, understanding, spiritual enlightenment, denominational baggage etc to the picnic … to engage with the author and their views… in the process we may discover what God is saying/ revealing to us. I recall a very interesting talk at Greenbelt a few years ago about ‘Sideways Theology’ by a fascinating Jesuit Priest and theologian and how he would invite Mexican workers/immigrants in New Mexico to their community to read and interpret the Scriptures together and learn from each other… very inspiring”
