Take a trip to the mall and improve your blog 13 #31DBBBDay13 with @problogger

Time to go shopping – getting you away from the computer, and engaged in an observational exercise.

Today’s Task

Take 30 minutes or so with a notepad paper in the shops and consider the following questions:

  • Who’s there? Who are they with?
  • What are they doing?
  • What are they buying? What products are particularly in demand at the moment?
  • How do they make their buying decisions?
  • What are the retailers doing to attract people’s attention and stand out?
  • What messages are they using in their marketing?
  • What colors or design techniques are popular at the moment?
  • What else is in fashion?
  • What sales techniques are sales staff using?
  • What are retail outlets doing well? What are they doing poorly?

Make notes, initially without seeking lessons, then sit down and think what lessons you might apply to your blogging. Darren has done this frequently and comes away with at least one new idea to apply to his blogging.

My Thoughts: attractive shops are colourful, light, tidy, well ordered, themed/grouped, easy to navigate, there are calls to action, they highlight particular products, they are in touch with the seasons, things out of date have been put on sale/removed.

See Darren’s thoughts on what he learnt from an umbrella salesman … particularly the idea that he had anticipated what people wanted to find, and placed that in front of people (at a price they were prepared to pay, when the need arose – aka the rain!)

Other Places to Look

  • a walk through your town
  • 30 minutes of watching TV, especially one marketing items
  • your local library
  • a local tourist destination
