Ecclesiastes – written 10th century BC probably by Solomon. A book which observes life around us and draws logical conclusions. Life without God is meaningless! Only when a person turns to God will they find true happiness. Life is not for living for oneself, ignoring others and God – life is best lived with an others and God focus – a message from 10th century BC still relevant today.

Whenever I think or read Ecclesiastes I start singing “to everything turn, turn, turn…”

“God has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men… I know there is nothing better for men to be happy and do good while they live. That everyone may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil – that is the gift of God. I know that everything God does will endure for ever, nothing can be added to it or taken away…”

Powerful words indeed – when we live life around this truth life becomes a lot happier – we realise that to everything there is a time and a season and time and season is not something we can control – rather God controls these things!

“There is not a righteous man on earth who does what is right and never sins”

In conversation with a group of festival goers whilst volunteering as one of the Leeds Festival Angels one of the group said to me – “this girl is a lesbian – on a scale of 1 to 10 how much do you love her?” – I asked what was 1 and what was 10, “1 is going to hell, 10 is you love her as a person” I said 10 – they were shocked but asked “how much does God love her” – 10 I said and on enquiring why 10 I replied “I love you and God loves you – there may be things in your life that I and God disapprove of, but there are things in my life I and God disapprove of – but you are a person created and loved by God and you are a 10!” She looked at me, tears in her eyes, and said “I like you!”

Let us get real – observe life around us and seek to present the reality of God to those we can – God has made everything beautiful even though we all mess up and do things that yourself and God disapproves of!
